This addition / remodel of an existing 1,000 square foot one-story house is located on a narrow lot in Santa Monica. Our design transformed the house into a 2,500 square foot two-story home and workspace. The diagram for the maximum allowable volume and height restrictions produced the house shape. The animated roofline extends into the front yard to create an exterior dining area and peels off on the side for a new entry.
The first floor living room opens to a large tree in the back yard. The interior spaces flow into the exterior landscape. The second story front windows frame views of planes landing at the nearby Santa Monica Airport. The red volume acts as a gallery space for the owners’ art collection and a bridge to the private bedrooms and bathrooms.
